How can I stop overthinking before I fall asleep?
Every night I lie in bed and my brain just won't shut off. I start thinking about tomorrow's to-do list, then I remember something embarrassing I said 3 years ago, then I worry about money, then I think about thinking too much. It usually takes me 1-2 hours to fall asleep. I've tried meditation apps but they don't really work for me. I'm exhausted all day because of this.

I dealt with this for years, and what finally worked for me wasn't meditation—it was a technique called "cognitive shuffling." Here's how it works:
When your brain starts spiraling, don't try to stop the thoughts (that makes them worse). Instead, pick a random word like "barn." Then visualize random objects starting with each letter: B - bear, A - apple, R - rocket, N - noodle. Keep going for 2-3 minutes.
This works because your brain can't overthink and visualize random unrelated images at the same time. It essentially forces your brain into a neutral mode.
Other things that helped me personally:
- Write a "brain dump" list 1 hour before bed. Get everything out of your head onto paper so your brain doesn't need to hold it.
- Keep your room cold (65-68°F). Warm rooms make overthinking worse.
- No screens 30 min before bed. The blue light keeps your brain in alert mode.
Try cognitive shuffling tonight. It's weird but it works fast.
