How do I build an email list from scratch?
I just started a blog about personal finance and I have 200 visitors a day but only 12 email subscribers. I have a free PDF lead magnet but nobody's downloading it. How do I actually get people to subscribe?

200 visitors with 12 subscribers means your lead magnet isn't compelling enough or people can't find it. Here's what works in 2024. First, your lead magnet needs to solve a specific, urgent problem. "Ultimate Guide to Personal Finance" is boring. "The 5-Minute Budget That Saved Me $3,000 This Year" is specific and irresistible. Make it a checklist, not a long PDF.
Second, placement matters more than anything. Don't just put a form in your sidebar. Add a pop-up that appears after 30 seconds of scrolling (not immediately — that's annoying). Add an inline form in the middle of your best blog post. Add a slide-in at the bottom when people are about to leave.
Third, use exit-intent popups. When someone moves their mouse to close the tab, show a "Wait! Grab this free checklist before you go" popup. These convert 3-5x better than regular forms.
Use Mailchimp or ConvertKit (both free under 1,000 subscribers). Create a welcome email sequence that delivers the lead magnet immediately, then sends 2-3 valuable emails over the next week. Most people never even send the welcome email — that's why they don't grow.
