How do I get my kids to do chores without fighting?

I have 3 kids (ages 8, 10, and 13) and getting them to do chores is like pulling teeth. I've tried allowance charts, taking away phones, threatening. They do it begrudgingly and everything takes 10x longer than it should. I'm exhausted from nagging. My wife and I are fighting about it too. Is there a system that actually works?

Nagging doesn't work because it creates resistance, not responsibility. Here's a system that actually works (used by thousands of families):

**The "Family Contribution" system:

1. **Every family member contributes—including you and your wife**. Kids mirror what they see. If you're not doing your share, they won't do theirs.

2. **Assign specific chores, not "clean your room."** Instead: "Every night before bed, put all dirty clothes in the hamper and put 3 things away." Specific = doable. Vague = ignored.

3. **Use a visual chart on the fridge**. Each child gets a column. They check off their chores daily. No allowance tied to it—just expectation.

4. **Natural consequences, not punishments.** No chore done = no screen time that day. Not as punishment—as a natural result: "Chores come before fun."

5. **Weekly family meeting (15 min, Sunday night)**. Everyone says what they did well and what they'll improve. This builds ownership.

Stop fighting about it. The system fights for you.
