How do I negotiate a higher salary?

I got a job offer for $62k but I was expecting at least $70k. I really want this job but I don't want to leave money on the table. How do I ask for more without them rescinding the offer?

You absolutely should negotiate — most employers expect it and have budget flexibility. Here's exactly how to do it. Don't say "I need $70k." Instead, say: "I'm really excited about this role and I'd love to join the team. Based on my research for similar positions in this market and my experience with [specific skill], I was hoping we could discuss a salary closer to $70k. Would that be possible?" This is confident but not aggressive. Then be quiet and let them respond. If they push back, you can negotiate other things: sign-on bonus, extra PTO, remote work days, a 6-month salary review. Have a BATNA (backup option) in mind — if they truly can't budge, decide beforehand if $62k is still worth taking. Most of the time, they'll meet you somewhere in the middle. The worst they can say is no, and you're in the same position you are now. Never accept the first offer without trying.
