How do I stop my teenager from being on their phone all day

My 15-year-old is on their phone from the moment they wake up until they fall asleep. I've tried taking it away but they have a complete meltdown. Their grades are slipping. I don't know what to do anymore.

Taking the phone away cold turkey almost never works and usually makes things worse. Here's what actually works with teenagers.

First, have a calm conversation (not during a fight) and explain that you're not trying to punish them — you're worried about their sleep, grades, and mental health. Teenagers respond to logic more than you think.

Set a family phone agreement together. Not rules you impose — rules you negotiate. Example: no phones at the dinner table, no phones in the bedroom after 10pm, phone goes in a basket during homework time. When they help create the rules, they're more likely to follow them.

Second, make the alternative more appealing. If their only option when they put the phone down is boredom, they'll choose the phone every time. Plan family activities, get them into a sport or hobby, or just hang out with them. Connection is the antidote to screen addiction.

Third, model the behavior yourself. If you're scrolling at dinner, they will be too. Put your phone away when you're with them.
