How do I travel cheap without being miserable

I want to travel more but I'm broke. Every travel blog shows $200/night hotels and fancy restaurants. I make $40k a year. How do I actually travel on a budget without suffering?

You absolutely can travel amazing places for $30-50/day. Here's how I do it.

Flights: Use Google Flights with the "Explore" feature. Set your departure city and dates as flexible, and it shows you the cheapest places to fly. Tuesday and Wednesday flights are usually 30-40% cheaper.

Accommodation: Hostels aren't just for partiers. Most have private rooms for $20-30/night. Also look for guesthouses on Booking.com or Airbnb can be cheap if you stay outside the city center. Also try Couchsurfing for free stays — it's not sketchy, it's a real community.

Food: Eat where locals eat. Avoid anything within 2 blocks of a tourist attraction. Use the Google Maps trick: search "street food near me" or "local market." In Southeast Asia, a full meal costs $1-2. In Europe, grocery stores are your best friend — buy bread, cheese, fruit, and eat like a local.

Activities: Free walking tours (tip-based), public beaches, hiking. The best travel experiences are almost always free.
