How do noise-canceling headphones block out external sound?

What technology is inside premium headphones that allows them to silence loud airplane engines and background chatter?

They use Active Noise Cancellation (ANC). Microphones on the outside of the headphones listen to ambient noise. The internal electronics then instantly generate a reverse sound wave (anti-noise) that perfectly cancels out the incoming low-frequency sound waves.
