How do solar panels convert sunlight into electricity?

Solar panels are made of silicon semiconductors. When photons from sunlight hit the silicon, they knock electrons loose from their atoms. Metal conductive plates collect these free-flowing electrons, creating a direct electrical current (DC) that is converted to AC power.
