How do submarine sonars detect objects in the pitch-black ocean?

If deep sea submarines cannot use windows or lights, how do they navigate and track enemy ships silently?

They use passive and active sonar. Passive sonar simply listens via sensitive hydrophones for the distinct mechanical noises of other ships. Active sonar 'pings' a sound wave into the water; the wave hits an object and bounces back. By timing the echo, the sub calculates the exact distance and shape of the target.
