How do you safely remove a stripped screw from dense hardwood furniture?
The metal cross on the head of my cabinet screw is completely rounded out. How do I extract it without splintering the surrounding oak wood?

Place a wide rubber band flat across the stripped hole, then insert your screwdriver firmly into the rubber. Turn slowly; the rubber fills the gaps and provides extreme friction grip. If that fails, carefully drill a tiny hole into the center and use a specialized reverse-thread screw extractor bit.
