How does public-key cryptography secure internet communications?
When I type a password into a website, how does SSL/TLS encryption guarantee that hackers intercepting the data only see gibberish?

It uses an asymmetric key pair. The server gives your browser a 'public key' that can only lock (encrypt) data. Your browser uses it to scramble your password into a mathematically unbreakable string. Once sent, only the server's hidden 'private key' has the exact mathematical formula required to unlock and read it.
