My credit score dropped 40 points for no reason

I checked my credit score last week and it was 720. Today I checked again and it's 680. I haven't opened any new accounts, missed any payments, or done anything different. How is this possible?

A 40-point drop with no obvious action usually comes from one of these hidden causes. First, check if your credit utilization spiked — if you paid down a credit card but the payment hasn't been reported yet, or if a balance was reported before you paid it, that can tank your score. Utilization above 30% is bad, above 50% is terrible. Second, an old negative item might have just been reported — sometimes collections don't show up for months. Check your full credit report (free at AnnualCreditReport.com). Third, you might have closed an old credit card — that reduces your average account age and total available credit, both of which hurt your score. Fourth, a hard inquiry you forgot about (like a rental application or utility check) might have hit. Fifth, there could be identity theft — someone opened an account in your name. Check for accounts you don't recognize. Pull all three bureaus' reports. If you find an error, dispute it. If not, your score will likely bounce back in 1-2 months as long as you keep paying on time. Don't panic — scores fluctuate.
