My credit score dropped 50 points for no reason

I checked my credit score last month and it was 740. Today I checked and it's 690. I haven't opened any new cards, I haven't missed any payments, I haven't done anything. What could cause a 50-point drop like that?

A 50-point drop with no obvious reason usually comes from one of these hidden factors. Check each one.

1. Credit utilization changed. Even if you didn't spend more, your credit card issuer might have reported a higher balance. Or if your credit limit got reduced (they do this sometimes without telling you), your utilization ratio goes up. Check each card's available credit — it might be lower than you think.

2. A hard inquiry appeared. Did you apply for anything recently? Even a pre-approval check can drop your score 5-10 points. Multiple inquiries in a short period add up.

3. An old account closed. If a credit card you rarely use got closed (by you or the issuer), your average account age drops, which hurts your score.

4. A derogatory mark appeared. Check your full report at AnnualCreditReport.com (free). Look for any collections, late payments, or accounts you don't recognize. Sometimes errors happen and a wrong late payment gets reported.

Pull your free report from all 3 bureaus and dispute anything inaccurate. Most incorrect items get removed within 30 days.
