My Instagram followers keep dropping for no reason

I had 8,500 followers on Instagram 3 weeks ago and now I'm at 7,200. I didn't buy any followers, I didn't do anything weird. I post consistently every day. Why are people unfollowing me and how do I stop it?

A drop of 1,300 followers in 3 weeks is actually pretty normal and here's why. Instagram regularly removes fake/bot followers from accounts. If you ever accidentally bought followers (even years ago), Instagram purges them in waves. That's the most likely explanation.

Second, your content might not be resonating the way it used to. If your engagement rate (likes + comments / followers) is below 2%, Instagram's algorithm shows your posts to fewer people, which leads to more unfollows. It becomes a snowball effect.

Here's how to reverse it. First, stop posting daily if it's burning you out — quality beats quantity. Post 4-5 times per week with strong hooks in the first 3 seconds of Reels. Reels are the only format that reliably reaches new people right now.

Second, engage with your current followers. Reply to every comment within the first hour. Use stories with polls and questions to boost interaction.

Third, do a content audit. Look at your top 10 performing posts from the last month and make more content like that. Stop guessing what people want — let the data tell you.
