My laptop fans are running loud all the time

My laptop has been making jet engine noises for the past week. The fans kick on full blast even when I'm just browsing Chrome with 2 tabs open. It's getting really annoying and the bottom gets super hot. What's going on?

Loud fans + heat with light usage means something is eating your CPU in the background. First, open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) and sort by CPU usage. Look for any process using more than 10-20% when you're not doing anything. Common culprits: Windows Update stuck in a loop, antivirus scans, or a crypto miner virus. If you see something suspicious, google it. Second, physical dust is a huge problem — if you haven't cleaned your laptop in 2+ years, the fans and vents are probably clogged. Get a can of compressed air and blow out the vents. Third, check your power settings: go to Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings > Processor power management > Maximum processor state > set to 99% (this disables turbo boost). Fourth, make sure your laptop is on a hard surface, never on a blanket or bed. If nothing works, the thermal paste may have dried out — a repair shop can replace it for $50-80 and it'll run like new.
