My laptop overheats and shuts down randomly

My Dell laptop shuts down randomly when I'm doing anything more than browsing the web. It gets super hot on the bottom and the fan sounds like a jet engine. I bought it 18 months ago. Is it broken or can I fix it?

This is almost always fixable and usually pretty cheap. An 18-month-old laptop overheating usually means one of two things: dust buildup or degraded thermal paste.

First, try the easy stuff. Use compressed air (canned air) to blow out the vents. Do this every 3-6 months. If you've never cleaned it, there's probably a thick layer of dust clogging the heatsink. This alone fixes the problem 50% of the time.

Second, if cleaning doesn't help, the thermal paste between the CPU and heatsink has probably dried out. This is a $5 part but applying it requires opening the laptop. If you're not comfortable doing this, a repair shop will do it for $40-80.

Third, check what's causing the heat. Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) and look at CPU usage. If something is using 80-100% CPU constantly, that's your problem. It could be malware, a runaway Chrome tab, or a background update.

Also, never use your laptop on a pillow or blanket — it blocks the vents. Use a laptop cooling pad ($15-20 on Amazon) to help. If it still shuts down after cleaning, the heatsink might be physically damaged and needs replacement.
