My plant keeps dying no matter what I do

I've killed 6 plants in the past year. I water them, I give them sunlight, I talk to them (yes I do). They always start looking good for a few weeks then just turn yellow and die. Am I cursed or do plants just hate me?

You're not cursed — you're almost certainly overwatering. 90% of houseplant deaths are from overwatering, not neglect. Here's why: when you water too often, the roots sit in wet soil, can't breathe, and rot. That rot turns the leaves yellow, which people assume means "needs more water," so they water more and kill it faster.

Here's your new rule: stick your finger 2 inches into the soil. If it's dry, water. If it's moist or wet, wait. That's it. No schedule, no guessing. Let the plant tell you.

Also, does your pot have drainage holes? No holes = dead plant. Every time. The water has nowhere to go.

Start with a pothos or snake plant — they thrive on neglect. Water them every 2-3 weeks. I promise you, the less you do, the happier they'll be.

Stop killing with kindness. Your plants want you to ignore them more.
