My plant keeps dying. What am I doing wrong?

I've killed 3 plants in the last year. I water them, give them sunlight, and they still turn yellow and die. I have a pothos right now that's already looking sad. Am I just not meant to have plants?

You're not cursed — you're probably overwatering. Overwatering kills more plants than anything else. When you water on a schedule ("every Monday") instead of checking the soil, you drown the roots. Here's the fix: stick your finger 1-2 inches into the soil. If it's dry, water. If it's still moist, wait. Pothos specifically are almost indestructible, so if yours is dying, it's definitely getting too much water or sitting in a pot without drainage holes. Make sure your pot has a hole in the bottom — no exceptions. Also, pothos prefer indirect light, not direct sunlight (that yellowing you're seeing is often light stress, not under-watering). They're actually better in lower light than most plants. Stop watering on a schedule. Let the plant tell you when it's thirsty. Buy a $5 moisture meter if you need to. You're not a plant killer — you're just an over-loving plant parent. Dial it back and your pothos will thrive.
