Should I take a gap year before college?

I'm a high school senior and I got into a decent school but I have zero idea what I want to study. Everyone around me is so sure of themselves. I'm thinking about taking a year off to work and figure things out. My parents think it's a waste of time. What should I do?

First — there is absolutely nothing wrong with not knowing what you want to study. Most 18-year-olds don't, and the ones who seem sure are often just picking what their parents want. A gap year can be amazing IF you have a plan. The worst gap year is "I'll just work at Starbucks and figure it out." The best gap year has structure: work full-time to save money AND take a community college class or online course in something you're curious about. Volunteer, travel cheap, intern somewhere — anything that gives you real-world experience. This actually makes you a better college student because you'll know WHY you're there. Tell your parents that studies show gap year students have higher GPAs and lower dropout rates. The key is having a plan, not just "taking time off." If you can commit to working and exploring intentionally, do it. You'll thank yourself at 22.
