Tsunamis are triggered by massive underwater displacements, usually earthquakes or landslides. In the deep ocean, the energy wave travels at jetliner speeds but is only a few feet tall. As it hits shallow coastal waters, friction slows the wave down, forcing the massive energy upward into a towering wall of water.
