What is the correct and safe wiring sequence for installing a modern smart light switch?

Always turn off the breaker first. The black wire is 'Line/Hot' (bringing power in). The red or secondary black wire is 'Load' (sending power to the light). The bare copper or green wire is 'Ground' (safety). Smart switches also strictly require the white 'Neutral' wire to maintain their own constant internal power.
