Why did the Soviet Union build the Berlin Wall during the Cold War?

Following WWII, Berlin was divided. The Soviet-controlled East suffered economically, prompting millions of skilled workers and intellectuals to flee into the prosperous, capitalist West Berlin. To halt this massive 'brain drain' and economic collapse, the Soviets constructed the wall in 1961 to physically lock citizens inside.
