Why do dogs have a powerful instinct to bury bone treats deep in the backyard dirt?

My domestic dog doesn't lack food, but every time I give them a large bone, they run outside and dig a hole to bury it. What ancestral habit drives this?

This is an ancestral survival behavior called caching inherited from wild wolves. Burying food protects it from competing predators and acts as a natural refrigerator, keeping the meat fresh longer.
