Why does my car make a clicking noise when I turn the key?

When I turn the key in my 2012 Honda Civic, I hear a rapid clicking sound but the engine won't start. The lights and radio work fine though. If I wait 10 minutes and try again it usually starts. What's going on?

That clicking sound is your starter motor trying to engage but not having enough power to actually turn the engine over. Since your lights and radio work, your battery isn't completely dead — it's just weak. The most likely cause is a dying battery. Car batteries typically last 3-5 years, and your 2012 Civic is well past that. The "wait 10 minutes and it works" thing is the key clue — it means the battery has just enough juice to start after resting, but not enough when cold or under load. Go to any auto parts store (AutoZone, O'Reilly, etc.) — they'll test your battery for free. It'll probably show "bad" or "replace soon." A new battery is like $120-180 installed, which is way cheaper than a new starter motor ($300-500). Also, while you're there, have them check your alternator — a weak alternator can cause the same symptoms over time. Don't ignore this or you'll be stranded eventually.
