Why does my coffee maker taste bad all of a sudden

I've had the same Keurig for 2 years and it always made great coffee. Now every cup tastes bitter and weak no matter what pod I use. I've tried different brands. I cleaned it last week. What's going on?

This is a super common Keurig problem and it's almost always one of three things. Let me walk you through it.

First, mineral buildup. Even if you cleaned it last week, the internal heating element can have calcium buildup that affects water temperature. If the water isn't hot enough, your coffee will taste weak and bitter. Run 3-4 cycles of plain white vinegar through the machine (fill the reservoir, run it, let it sit 30 min, run again). Then do 2 more cycles of plain water to rinse.

Second, the needle that punctures the pod might be clogged. Use a paperclip to gently clean the tiny needle hole at the bottom of the pod holder. Coffee grounds and mineral deposits block this and cause weak brews.

Third, your water quality changed. If you use filtered water, replace the filter. If you use tap water, try bottled water for a few days to see if it makes a difference. Hard water is the silent killer of coffee makers.

If none of this works, the heating element might be dying. At that point it's probably time for a new machine.
