Why does your household refrigerator produce a clicking sound right before the cooling fan starts running?

My kitchen fridge randomly emits a sharp metallic click sound every few hours followed immediately by the hum of the internal cooling motor. Is this a sign of component failure?

No, that sound is completely normal. It is the electrical compressor relay switch snapping closed to supply voltage to the motor. If the clicking happens repeatedly every few minutes without the motor starting, the relay or capacitor is failing.
