Why is Pluto no longer considered a major planet?

The International Astronomical Union updated the definition of a planet to require three things: it must orbit the sun, be round due to its own gravity, and have 'cleared the neighborhood' around its orbit. Pluto failed the third rule, as its orbit shares space with other icy objects in the Kuiper Belt.
