Why was the Great Wall of China originally built?

It was not a single wall, but a series of fortifications built over centuries by different dynasties (mainly the Ming Dynasty). Its primary purpose was to protect the empire from nomadic invasions by groups like the Mongols from the Eurasian Steppe, and to control trade along the Silk Road.
